A Visual History of the Safety Pin
Safety Pins : a 1920 essay by Christopher Morley
This exhibition was on view June 2012 -December 2012. The title of the exhibition came from Christopher Morely’s 1920 essay on the safety pin, and embodied the spirit of the exhibition, which offered unique views of the safety pin, including unlikely objects made from safety pins, a miniature safety pin menagerie, and a special collection of ancient roman fibula (the precursor to the safety pin.) A lively visual history recounted the invention of the modern safety pin, and unique safety pins from around the world were also on display, along side many other safety pin-related ephemera and oddities. At the opening day celebration June 24th from 3-6pm, itinerant performers the Dolly Wagglers (Adam Cook and Lindsay McCaw) and local vaudeville revivalists Rose Friedman and Justin Lander performed live music, and local animator/filmmaker Meredith Holch presented a paper movie about Walter Hunt, the inventor of the Safety Pin.
