CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS! CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
THE MUSEUM OF EVERYDAY LIFE IS CALLING FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO ITS UPCOMING NEW FEATURED EXHIBITION ABOUT DUST which will open on Sunday, May 31st, 2015, in Glover, Vermont!
This exhibition, inaugurating our 5th year of existence, is something of a departure. With the Dust exhibition we will be exploring this most ubiquitous substance that gathers in all corners of everyday life. We are accepting all kinds of contributions, including, but not limited to: Dust removal Objects (feather dusters, brooms, brushes); Anecdotes (personal stories involving Dust, little known facts, urban myths); Scholarship (papers or meditations on any subject related to Dust, research and/or photos of magnified dust mites, any dust-related historical research); Art (objects fabricated from/with Dust, ingenious displays of Dust, microsculpture); and, most importantly, Dust Samples from specific particular locations (Space Dust, Moon Dust, 19th Century Cathedral Dust, Book Dust, Dust Bowl Dust, Medieval or Modern Reliquaries, Significant Ashes, celebrity belly button lint, etc.) We are also hoping to collect a number of pulp fiction and scifi paperbacks featuring the word “Dust” prominently in the title (dog-eared copies welcome.) Microscopes and magnification devices would also be of interest.
Be aware that the Museum is a self-service institution and does not always have staff on hand, therefore the safety and security of donated objects cannot be guaranteed, although every effort is made to keep all donations as safe as possible. To donate, or for more information, contact Clare Dolan via the “contact us” tab on the navigation bar above. Contributions must be received no later than May 16th. Submissions will be reviewed and every effort is made to include all submissions, however due to space constraints not every submission may be displayed. All submission will be returned after the exhibition is de-installed, if a self-addressed, postage paid return mailing device is sent with the submission. Send submissions to Museum of Everyday Life, 3482 Dry Pond Rd, Glover, VT 05839
Please circulate this widely, post on social media, tell your friends. Interested in participating in the exhibit installation? JOIN US!
Weekend #1: Friday May 1st – Sunday May 3rd: the focus here will most likely be basic cleaning and organizing tasks: cleaning/repairing things from wintertime wear and tear, re-organizing the work space to be ready for the upcoming frenzy of activity, making selections from the toothbrush exhibit to be moved into the “Great Hall” to become part of the permanent collection, and preparing the “Great Hall” spaces to receive the selected toothbrush exhibit objects.
Weekend #2: Saturday May 9th – Sunday May 10th: This work period will most likely focus on de-installing the Toothbrush exhibit, installing the selected toothbrush pieces in the Great Hall, and putting the rest into storage, re-arranging the walls in the exhibit space and re-painting them, and perhaps building a few additional walls as well.
Weekend #3: Friday May 22nd – Sunday May 24th: This will be a key weekend!! I am hoping during these days we will be able to start building vitrines, mounting specimens, generating label texts and start installing pieces. All the creative stuff. Lighting will also be important this week – we’ll be experimenting to determine what kinds of lighting supplies we’ll need and how to set it up.
Final Blitz: Monday May 25th – Saturday May 30th: All installation all week long – finish exhibit pieces, installation, lighting, cranking out Product for the Store, preparing the grounds for the opening day, etc etc etc.
OPENING OF THE DUST EXHIBIT SUNDAY MAY 31 ST, TIME TBA!

The Museum of Everyday life presents Banners & Cranks NEK: An Evening of Cantastoria and Cranky Performances.
Witness a millennium-old art form re-imagined as performers from across the country offer up a weekend of contemporary cantastoria and cranky performances in Vermont! Cantastoria is the Italian word for an ancient performance form, which involves pictures, live music and sung narration. Crankies are pictures on a scroll moved by means of a hand-cranked mechanism. This is a living and breathing folk performance practice that has found its own particular place alongside the technology and media of the 21st century! The evening features Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth Laprelle, renowned folk musicians dedicated to the mountain music tradition, bringing a captivating mix of ballads and foot-stomping dance tunes illustrated by hand-sewn crankies and painted banners, all the way from Virginia. Local performers Adam Cook, Modern Times Theater, Clare Dolan and Meredith Holch round out the evening with cantastoria and cranky stories of mayhem, crime, heroism, inspiration, and mischief. Some special surprise guests will also join the performances each night! Thursday March 19th at 7:30pm at Light Club Lamp Shop, 12 North Winooski Ave (next to Radio Bean) in Burlington, and Friday March 20th at 7:30 pm at Parker Pie 161 County Rd in West Glover. All tickets $15 at the door or cheaper if you’re broke, no one turned away. For more information call 802-626-4409.

The Museum of Everyday Life announces
Day of the Dead at the Museum of Everyday Life!
November 2nd , 2014 2pm-7pm
As we sink into winter in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, on the day when we turn our clocks back to welcome in the months of lengthening darkness, as the near leafless trees stretch their skeletal arms towards the darkening sky, the Museum of Everyday Life invites all to celebrate the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead, a holiday that is observed around the world by many cultures. It is a time when friends and family gather to remember, celebrate and pray for ancestors and deceased loved ones.
In the spirit of celebrating ancestors, welcoming winter, and reveling in everyday life’s simple pleasures, the festivities of the day will include a 5K Cross Country Trail Run followed by awards (costumes encouraged, no racing spikes please,) an altar-creation and miniature boat-building workshop, a boat race on the stream, live music, performances, readings, snacks and drinks, and a bonfire.
The schedule for the day is as follows:
2 pm : miniature boat building, altar making, dress up
2:45 : miniature boat race down the brook
3 pm : 5k Cross Country Trail Run followed by awards (costumes encouraged!)
4 pm : Readings and Performances: Author and curator of the Toothbrush and Dental Accessory Archive of Montpelier, Gary Lee Miller, will read from his new collection of short fiction, Museum of the Americas. There will also be performances by animator/filmmaker Meredith Holch, Burlington-based theater artist Emily Anderson, the Museum’s own Clare Dolan, and music by the Infamous Kick the Bucket Brigade and local songstress/printmaker Lila Winstead.
5 pm : Bonfire, revelry
* To participate in the 5K trail run, please arrive early to register. * Race registration suggested donation is $20 for adults, $15 for students and kids, which includes a T-shirt, sugar skull, and treats.
