The Ballad of Jacob Apfelboeck, the lilly of the field
Inspired by a newspaper article describing a real crime committed in Germany in the early 1920’s, Bertold Brecht wrote both the words and music, most probably intending this piece to be performed as a contemporary moritat. (See “About Sung Paintings” for more information about this form.) As part of an ongoing project reviving historical cantastoria, Clare Dolan of The Museum of Everyday Life recreates this historic piece, often performing it as part of Mild Light, an evening of cantastoria performance from the collection of the Museum of Everyday Life.
