Stilt Dancing Workshops
Of course stilt dancing, an ancient and venerable art form, is dear to us at the Museum of Everyday Life. Stilt dancing is an integral part of our annual participation in local vermont parades and festivals, and is often central to our own parade-making activities in other communities as well. On a crisp autumn morning, passers-by might see Museum staff stilt dancing in a distant meadow behind the exhibition barn, revitalizing Mind, Spirit, and Peripheral Circulation prior to the dawn of a new workday…
A typical 5 or 10 Day stilt dancing workshop will walk students through stilt assembly using a very simple but functional design, teach introductory stilt walking/dancing, and introduce techniques for creating simple stilt choreographies for parading. The longer workshop allow us to play with the distortion of the human form that stilts allow, creating costumes, headdresses, and “furniture” to further that exploration.
